SNEHJYOT MUKTA PROJECT

Snehalaya, through its Snehjyot project, runs dispensaries for sexually exploited women in the red light areas of Ahmednagar, Kopargaon, Shrirampur, Shevgaon and Jamkhed. Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART) has also been provided for 1500 HIV infected patients at half the cost of treatment. Patients are also provided free treatment for T.B.(Tuberculosis, DOT Treatment) and other minor illnesses by well-qualified doctors. Besides healthcare, Snehalaya also runs day and night care centers for children in these areas, manages women's small saving groups, conducts regular counseling, propagation/training/availability of contraceptives, rescue operations of minors from red light areas etc.

Mukta, meaning freedom is the name chosen by the key population to represent the essence of the project that not only provides a package of comprehensive health services but also empowers them to gain greater control over their lives.
The feminized butterfly taking flight symbolizes the hope (Asha). Direction (Disha) and liberation (Mukti) sought by Female Sex Workers, Men having Sex with Men and Tamasha Artists.

MUKTA APPROACH

Medical Services - Providing comprehensive health services with a focus on STI reduction. Project supported clinics and local preferred providers are trained for this purpose. The key population is involved in clinic management as paramedics and community health volunteers.

Enabling Environment - Advocacy with the police, media and government services, and working to obtain social entitlements for key population members, help to create an enabling environment in which the vulnerabilities of FSWs, MSM and TAs to STI / HIV / AIDS are reduced.

Outreach and Community Mobilization - Peer Educators are the pillars of the outreach component. These trained members of the key population promote messages on STI prevention and condom use. They also encourage their peers to undergo monthly health check-ups.

Empowerment of the key population is at the heart of all project activities. This includes community mobilization, formation of Mukta groups and committees, collectivization and self-esteem exercises.
